St. Veronica

We only know one important incident in the life of Saint Veronica. This took place on the terrible day of our Lord's Passion.

Jesus was carrying His cross, and all around Him the people were laughing and screaming. They were throwing mud in His face. They were spitting on Him and tripped Him to make Him fall. Jesus looked around and saw no freinds. Everyone seemed to hate him. Then Veronica came and just happened to be in the crowd. She was timid and afraid, but she wanted to help Jesus. So, she took the veil off her head, pushed the soldiers aside and ran through the crowd. She came to Jesus who had just fallen, and was too weak to stand up. Lovingly, she wiped His face with her viel. Jesus looked up gratefully and thanked her with a smile before the soldiers pushed her away. When Veronica got home and looked at her veil, she found a wonderful thing. On the veil was a beautiful picture of Jesus. Veronica kept the veil as long as she lived. This event is commemorated in the Sixth Station of the Cross.

An Italian legend records that St. Veronica cured Emperor Tiberius with this image called Veronica's Veil and later left the veil in the care of Pope Clement and his successors.

French legend records that she married Zacheus, a convert, in France. She then accompanied him to Rome; let him as a hertim at Rocamadour; assisted Martial and brought relics of the Blessed Virgin Marry to Soulac where she died. Some identify her with "the woman with an issue of Blood" who was cured by Jesus.

St. Veronica's Prayer : Hear us, O God, our Saviour, so that we who rejoice in the feast of Blessed Veronica, may learn from her the spirit of loving devotion. Amen.
